𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧? 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝟐

Imām Al-Khāqānī has this to say about Lahn:

فأول علم الذكر إتقان حفظه

و معرفة في اللحن فيه إذ يجري

فكن عارفا باللحن كيما تزيلَه

و ما للذي لا يعرف اللحن من عذر

The first study of the (Divine) Remembrance (the Qur’ān) is mastering its memorization…

and recognition of an error from your mouth when it occurs.

So be aware of errors so that you may remove it,...

for there is no excuse for the one who does not recognise errors.

So,what is meant by Lahn?

اللحن لغة:- الخطأ و الميل عن الصواب

و اصطلاحا:- هو الخطأ الذي يطرأ على قراءة الكلمات القرآنية سواء أكان الخطأ ظاهرا أم خفيا أخلّ بالمعنى أم لا يخلّ

Lahn linguistically, means an error and deviation from correctness.

Technically, it refers to the error that occur in the recitation of the words of the Qur'ān. It makes no difference whether this error is clear or obscure, alters the meaning or doesn't alter the meaning.

Shaykh Uthmān Ibn Sulaymān Murād dedicated 10 beautiful lines from his poem, As-Salsabīl Ash-Shāfī, to give a comprehensive overview of Lahn. He described its types, the rulings on each and then profer solutions to overcome these errors

Let's see what he has to say

واللحنُ قسمانِ جَليٌّ وخَفِيْ ... كُلٌّ حرامٌ مَعْ خِلافٍ في الخَفِيْ

أمَّا الجَلِيْ فَخَطأٌ في المَبْنَى ... خَلَّ بهِ أو لا يَخِلُّ المعْنَى

أمَّا الخَفِيْ فَخَطأٌ في العُرفِ ... من غيرِ إِخلالٍ كَتَرْكِ الوَصْفِ

لا يَعرِفُ الخفِيْ سِوى المُجَوِّدِ ... ويَعْرِفُ الجَلِيَّ كُلُ واحدِ

صِيانةُ اللَفْظِ عَن الجَلِيِّ ... يدْعُونهُ بالواجبِ الشرعيِّ

وصَوْنُهُ عن الخَفِيْ المُشاعِ ... يَدْعُوَنَهُ بالواجبِ الصِّناعِيْ

وَقِيلَ إِنَّ الواجبَ الشرْعيَّا ... ما فيهِ إِجمَاعُهُمُ سَوِيَّا

والواجبُ الثاني أَيِ الصناعِيْ ... علَى ثلاثةٍ مِنَ الأَنواعِ

تَعليمُ مَنْ بطَبْعِهِ يُجيدُ ... قِراءةً أوْ شأنُهُ التقليدُ

أوْ كانَ مِنْ حُكْمِ الوُقوفِ يُدْرَى ... أوْ مِنْ مَسائلِ اختلافِ القُرَّا

Let's go through this lines one after the other

واللحنُ قسمانِ جَليٌّ وخَفِيْ ... كُلٌّ حرامٌ مَعْ خِلافٍ في الخَفِيْ

And the Lahn is two types; Jaliyy (Obvious) and Khafiyy (Obscured)... All is prohibited with a difference of opinion on the Khafiyy

He's saying that Lahn Jaliyy is Harām (prohibited) while there's a difference of opinions amongst the scholars regarding Lahn Khafiyy. Some put it at the same level as Jaliyy while others don't.

أمَّا الجَلِيْ فَخَطأٌ في المَبْنَى ... خَلَّ بهِ أو لا يَخِلُّ المعْنَى

As for the Jaliyy, it's an error in the (word) structure... whether it causes alterations to the meaning or not

This includes errors one make in switching a letter in place of another eg صراط as سراط or أعطينا as أعتينا etc..

Further examples include;

• Changing the harakah such أنعمتَ to أنعمتُ etc..

• Omitting or adding a natural Madd such as كانا to كان or يَحيَىٰ to يحيَ etc..

All these are errors that are prohibited and whoever does them intentionally is sinful for that.
